Uganda: What We Do
Surveillance
Recent HIV Infection Surveillance in Uganda
Since early 2019, UCSF has supported the implementation of recent HIV infection surveillance in Uganda. This data identifies areas with high rates of HIV acquisition, enabling targeted prevention efforts. Through our office, UCSF has collaborated with CDC Uganda, Uganda Ministry of Health, the Monitoring and Evaluation Technical Support Program (METS), and other implementing partners.
Key activities include:
-
Real-time access to recent HIV infection data will facilitate immediate public health responses;
-
Deployment of the recent infection surveillance system across more than 1000 health facilities in thirteen regions of Uganda, as part of case-based surveillance;
-
Coordination of continuous quality improvement activities; and
-
Support for data collection systems.
Recent HIV Infection Surveillance Cross-Cutting Support
Since 2018, UCSF has supported the roll-out of recent HIV infection surveillance in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia countries. This data helps identify areas with high HIV acquisition rates, allowing for focused prevention efforts. UCSF specifically targets technical assistance in data use, informatics, and continuous quality improvement (CQI). The Global Programs Uganda Informatics Team plays a crucial role in developing and maintaining dashboards and managing and utilizing data in Malawi, Namibia, Tanzania, and Kenya.
The CQI dashboards enable program teams to identify real-time issues and improve testing and surveillance quality. Uganda Global Programs members provide ongoing technical support for these Power BI and ODK dashboards, ensuring effective monitoring and response across the supported regions.
